A Free and Fun Game for Grammar

The Free Cozy Grammar Newsletter with Marie Rackham and Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma

Marie believed that grammar gives us a marvelous way to understand the power of language, a way she believed could also be fun.

That's why we wanted to share a free and fun game for learning the eight parts of speech.

Why the eight parts of speech? Marie believed that grammar enhances creativity by giving us the tools to use language clearly, compellingly, and joyfully. And the first and most fundamental of these tools are the eight parts of speech.

Here, for instance, is a video excerpt from Marie's quick and cozy introduction to nouns, which is also a wonderful example of how Marie always ties the concept of grammar to specific examples and contexts.

After you've watched the video, I'll share Marie's Cozy Grammar Game with you.

Nouns, as you can see, are naming words.

Learning the names of grammar, in turn, helps us to know what's what in our language.

It gives us new insight into the power of our very own words.

Marie's Life-Affirming Approach

Grammar, however, is often taught in a dry and lifeless way.

Even now, countless online courses are still basically a person standing in front of a blackboard, even if that blackboard is now a virtual video blackboard.

That's why Marie wanted to take the study of grammar outside the classroom, into the actual world of nature and of home. That's why she always gives concrete and easy-to-understand examples, not on a blackboard, but in the living context of daily life.

Marie's Cozy Grammar Game

In that spirit, we wanted to share Marie's Cozy Grammar Game, a free and fun way to learn and remember the eight parts of speech.

Here's a step-by-step introduction to folding and playing Marie's Cozy Grammar Game. You can download the free PDF from the link below the video.

I suggest taking a peek at the video first, and then downloading your own copy of the game from the link.

Cozy Grammar for a New Generation

If you saw our recent newsletter, you know that we've just released the second edition of our Basic Cozy Essay Course. We're thrilled to be able to offer this revised and updated edition for a new generation of students.

It even includes a trip to London to explore the interesting connections between London and essay writing as well as the ways that J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series has inspired many other forms of creativity.

One of the topics we look at is how J. K. Rowling's series has inspired the new two-part Harry Potter play currently running in London's West End.

Our Basic Cozy Grammar Course and our Basic Cozy Punctuation Course have also been completely revised and updated for online streaming, with more than twice the number of videos, new interactive exercises, and special mini-lessons and activities that tie grammar and punctuation directly to creativity and the art of writing.

Do take a peek if you're interested to learn more, and don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We'll do our best to answer your questions as quickly as possible.

Thank you for joining us. We'll look forward to seeing you again soon!
