The Secret of Marie’s Approach

The Free Cozy Grammar Newsletter with Marie Rackham and Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma

We recently received an email from a family that had steadily worked their way through all of Marie's courses.

"Marie’s curriculum," the mother wrote, "was the most valuable item in my huge shelf of homeschooling materials. I have been giving all my things away over the past two years, but I told a friend that Cozy Grammar was the only item with which I could not part."

Nothing is more meaningful to us than to have Marie's courses find their way to the people and places where they can make a real difference.

Part of the secret of Marie's approach is how freely she offers herself as she is. Her courses are as unique as she is, inspiring her students to embrace their own uniqueness.

This also means that they can be difficult to describe, since they can't easily be compared to anything else. They almost become a hidden secret. So we decided to put together a video that explains in detail how Cozy Grammar's courses work and what makes them so beloved by those who love them. Marie's courses may not be for everyone, but for those for whom her approach offers a refreshing alternative, they offer far more than just grammar. They offer an entire approach to learning and to life.

Take a peek at our new video to watch Cozy Grammar's Producer and Director, David Mielke, explain how Marie's courses work.

The Secret of Context

If part of Marie's secret is how she embraces her own uniqueness, another part of her secret is how she teaches grammar in context. When we study grammar in the context of nature and everyday life, we understand and remember far more deeply than if we had merely encountered the ideas in the abstract.

This is particularly important to me as a writer because I use grammar in context all the time. That's where my enthusiasm for the subject comes from. It always delights me to see students I've worked with understand how the principles of grammar can help strengthen their abilities as writers and their capacity for creativity.

So I wanted to share an example from Marie in which she takes a potentially dry and confusing topic and brings it to humorous life by putting it in context.

Take a look at this month's free excerpt from the Basic Cozy Grammar Course in which Marie uses her exercise bicycle as a way to introduce the different kinds of adverbs.

In the rest of the lesson, Marie goes on to explain adverbs of negation, adverbs of affirmation, and adverbs of emphasis.

All of these different kinds of adverbs help answer the questions WHERE, WHEN, WHY, and HOW.

In a way, you could say that our new video about how Cozy Grammar's Courses work is also a video all about adverbs. It shows that by teaching grammar contextually, visually, dramatically, and wholeheartedly, students learn the subject deeply and joyfully.

(By the way, If you're curious to explore more about adverbs, take a peek at a recent issue of our free newsletter called "What Are Adverbs?")

Cozy Grammar for a New Generation

If you've seen our recent newsletters, you know that we've just released the second edition of our Basic Cozy Essay Course. We're thrilled to be able to offer this revised and updated edition for a new generation of students.

It even includes a trip to London to explore the interesting connections between London and essay writing, as well as the ways that J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series has inspired many other forms of creativity. Check out our YouTube Channel to watch some free excerpts.

In Lesson 4, I walk students through a personal narrative essay as I walk, literally, through the sets for the Harry Potter movies at Leavesden Studios.

Our Basic Cozy Grammar Course and our Basic Cozy Punctuation Course have also been completely revised and updated for online streaming, with more than twice the number of videos, new interactive exercises, and special mini-lessons and activities that tie grammar and punctuation directly to creativity and the art of writing.

Do take a peek if you're interested to learn more, and don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We'll do our best to answer your questions as quickly as possible.

Thank you for joining us this month. We'll look forward to seeing you again soon!
